LEE-ENFIELD RIFLE

The Lee-Enfield rifle design was already fifty years old by the outbreak of the Second World War. Although there had been a number of minor adjustments over the years, the basic weapon of most soldiers in every section of every platoon was virtually the same as the one which had been carried by his predecessors in the Great War. Mechanically robust and reliable, and tremendously accurate, the Lee-Enfield had a calibre of .303in and a ten-round box magazine and continued its service as the primary rifle of the British Army until 1956.
